Benchmarking is at the heart of high quality UX.
Understandable and broad metrics are critical for UX dissemination across an organization.
Obviously, though, to properly triangulate data, UX teams need more granular metrics as well.
System Usability Scale (SUS)
Pros:
The 100 point scale is easily understandable.
Higher the better!
It is well established, validated, and utilized across the UX industry creating trust with stakeholders.
The 10-question Likert-scale framework is quick to implement across multiple methodologies.
Cons
Only measures attitudinal data.
Can be skewed higher if participants have prior experience with the system.
NASA Task Load Index (TLX)
Pros:
The 100 point scale is easily understandable.
Lower the better!
It is well established, validated, and utilized across multiple industries creating trust with stakeholders.
Accurate and effective across multiple methodologies.
Cons
Labor intensive to implement
Only measures attitudinal data
Recent studies have identified the “Effort” subscale as not directly comparable to the other subscales, presenting issues if included in the final score.
